QUOTES OF THE WEEK:

Bruce Springsteen on Bono and Jesus

Bono, where do I begin?…Shaman, shyster – one of the greatest and most endearingly naked messianic complexes in rock and roll. God bless you, man! It takes one to know one, of course. You see, every good Irish and Italian-Irish frontman knows that before James Brown there was Jesus. So hold the McDonald arches on the stage set, boys, we are not ironists. We are creations of the heart and of the earth and of the Stations of the Cross. There's no getting out of it. He is gifted with an operatic voice and a beautiful falsetto rare among strong rock singers. But most important, his is a voice shot through with self-doubt. That's what makes that big sound work. It is this element of Bono's talent, along with his beautiful lyric writing, that gives the often-celestial music of U2 its fragility and its realness. It is the questioning, the constant questioning in Bono's voice, where the band stakes its claim to its humanity and declares its commonality with us. Now Bono’s voice often sounds like it's shouting not over top of the band but from deep within it: "Here we are, Lord, this mess, in your image." – Bruce Springsteen, induction speech for U2 at the 2005 Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame

Bono on Pope John Paul II

"The best front man the Catholic Church ever had. A great show man, a great communicator of ideas even if you didn't agree with all of them, a great friend to the world's poor which is how I got to meet him. Without John Paul II its hard to imagine the Drop the Debt campaign succeeding as it did."
-- Bono comments on the passing of Pope John Paul II

Stray Cats lead singer Brian Setzer reveals his faith

"I’m a religious person. I’m a Catholic. But I think any kind of spirituality is good. My chosen spirituality is Catholicism and I believe in Jesus. Now, if I was to say that in Rolling Stone, it would probably either get edited out or there would be some snide comment about that. And that’s what I was talking about in a song like ("St. Jude"): How spirituality or religion is almost something people deride. A lot of the reason is because of the caricatures of religion, people like Jimmy Swaggart, Jim Bakker. Young people see that and say, ‘This is a joke.’ A lot of it is the fault of these people and a lot of it is the fault of the whole left-wing journalism of Spin magazine or Rolling Stone. It’s not ‘cool.’" – Stray Cats frontman Brian Setzer, The Desert Sun

Jane Fonda speaks candidly on her newfound Christian faith

I became a Christian. I didn't discuss it with him (former husband Ted Turner), because I knew that he would talk me out of it. And then when we separated, I began to really study it, and I thought, uh-oh, I don't know. There's a lot of problems I have here with this Christianity. Maybe I've made a mistake. I'm a feminist. But I'm on a journey. I am really studying it...feminism and Christianity are very compatible. The teachings of Jesus is, is feminist. What I mean by that is that all people, women as well as men, have to claim their whole humanity, have to open their hearts, have to care about the less-than, have to be generous and forgiving and peace-loving, and -- but he viewed everyone as a whole human being. He never looked down on women. And I have to just stay with that. I have to stay with those teachings and not the ones that say that women were the cause of the downfall of man and all that part. – Jane Fonda interviewed by Larry King

Billy Graham reflects on the passing of Pope John Paul II

I had the privilege of seeing the Pope on several occasions at the Vatican. And tonight, I have a very strange feeling of loss. I almost feel as though one of my family members has gone. I loved him very much and had the opportunity of discussing so many things with him. And we wrote each other several times during the years… He traveled throughout the world to bring his Christian message to the world. And we see tonight the outpouring from the world that he touched. And I think he touched almost everybody in the whole world… I think he's with the Lord, because he believed. He believed in the cross. That was his focus throughout his ministry, the cross, no matter if you were talking to him from personal issue or an ethical problem, he felt that there was the answer to all of our problems, the cross and the resurrection. And he was a strong believer. -- Billy Graham interviewed by Larry King

TV Networks Turn to Religious Themes

Now is the time in Hollywood when broadcast networks decide what shows TV audiences will want to watch in the season starting in September. Judging from several comedy and drama pilots now in progress that are already getting close consideration, America's couches will be turning into pews.

A splashy drama called "Book of Daniel" is in development at NBC, a unit of General Electric Co., while Viacom Inc.'s CBS is building a supernatural thriller around a character described as "a brilliant physicist with strong religious beliefs." News Corp.'s Fox, meanwhile, has "Briar + Graves," which the producers describe as "The X-Files" goes to church. It's the television industry's answer to the cash-generating power of biblical stories put through a pop-culture spin cycle. Mel Gibson's movie "The Passion of the Christ" was one of the top box-office hits last year, and Dan Brown's novel "The Da Vinci Code" has sold 25 million copies. Meanwhile, author Tim LaHaye's biblical "Left Behind" novels have racked up sales of some $650 million.

The U.S. Army gets into comic books

And the newest comic book publisher on the block: the US Army.

According to a listing on the Federal Business Opportunities website, the Army is looking to develop a comic book that will be distributed to youths in the Middle East, or, as the posting puts it: “In order to achieve long-term peace and stability in the Middle East, the youth need to be reached. One effective means of influencing youth is through the use of comic books. A series of comic books provides the opportunity for youth to learn lessons, develop role models and improve their education.”

Rick Warren has helped many find a 'Purpose Driven Life'

The Rev. Rick Warren wrote his best-selling "The Purpose Driven Life" to save souls, but even he was surprised when the man suspected of shooting his way out of an Atlanta courthouse heard God in his words and surrendered. Warren's role in the Georgia hostage drama earlier this month illustrates just how effectively the charismatic preacher has helped bring Christian evangelism to mainstream America.

After 22 years spent building one of the nation's largest megachurches in suburban Orange County, Warren rocketed to fame in 2002 with his no-frills primer on what it takes to be a Christian in the 21st century.

Pope John Paul II: Friend Of Bono, Fan Of Pop Culture

Pope John Paul II, who died Saturday of complications caused by a urinary infection, will be remembered as a religious and political figurehead, but the arts and popular culture also played a significant role in his adventurous life. The pontiff, who was an actor and a playwright in his youth, held annual concerts at the Vatican, quoted Bob Dylan and met with U2 singer Bono about lowering Third World debt. In 1997, John Paul II invited Dylan to perform for him at the World Eucharistic Congress in Bologna, Italy (see "Bob Dylan Plays For Pope, Delivers Acclaimed New Album"). After the concert, the pope referenced the singer/songwriter's famous song "Blowin' in the Wind," describing Christ as "the road a man must walk down before they call him a man." Later that year, the pontiff hosted B.B. King at the fifth annual Christmas concert at the Vatican, where the blues legend presented one of his trademark "Lucille" guitars to the Roman Catholic leader. John Paul II then welcomed Ricky Martin, Jewel and British pop star Cleopatra to the concert a year later.

In 1999, the pope met with Bono to discuss his Jubilee 2000 mission, which looked to rich countries to help reduce the debt of the world's poorest countries. "He's one of the great showmen of the 20th century," Bono said, dubbing him "the first funky pontiff" after their meeting. "I told him this and he picked up my wraparound shades and put them on. He's great, such grace and humanity."

Anne Lamott -- Writer, Christian, aging hippie

Anne Lamott has become something of a cult figure among harried single mothers, struggling writers, unapologetically liberal Christians and assorted others who have followed her life for years through her bestselling essay collections and novels and an online column for salon.com. Lamott was a blogger before blogging was cool.

Faithful readers know she is a recovering alcoholic and drug addict (clean and sober for 19 years) and a doting mother to Sam (a toddler when readers met him in 1993's Operating Instructions, he is a teenager now). She is a wildly irreverent, fearless and forthright "aging hippie type" (she turns 51 next month) who loves Jesus, loathes hypocrisy and insists that resting is the most spiritual of pursuits.

Africa -- The new center of Christianity

So with Easter approaching, here I am in the heart of Christendom. That's right - Africa. One of the most important trends reshaping the world is the decline of Christianity in Europe and its rise in Africa and other parts of the developing world, including Asia and Latin America.

I stopped at a village last Sunday morning here in Zimbabwe - and found not a single person to interview, for everyone had hiked off to church a dozen miles away. And then I dropped by a grocery store with a grim selection of the cheapest daily necessities - and huge multicolored chocolate Easter eggs.

Schiavo Case Highlights Catholic-Evangelical Alliance

The powerful outcry over Terri Schiavo, the brain-damaged Florida woman whose case has provoked a national debate over whether she should live or die, is a testament to the growing alliance of conservative Roman Catholics and evangelicals who have found common cause in the "culture of life" agenda articulated by Pope John Paul II.

In their fight to keep their daughter alive, Ms. Schiavo's parents, who are Catholics, have been backed by an ad hoc coalition of Catholic and evangelical lobbyists, street organizers and legal advisers like the Rev. Frank Pavone, the Catholic priest who runs a group called Priests for Life and evangelical Protestants like Randall Terry, founder of Operation Rescue, and the Rev. Pat Mahoney of the National Clergy Council.

Unlike grandpa Billy Graham, he's nonreligious, yet religious

(Stephan) Tchividjian, an associate pastor at Calvary Chapel in Fort Lauderdale and the oldest of evangelist Billy Graham's 19 grandchildren, has a peculiar way of casting his faith. ''I consider myself to be a very nonreligious religious person,'' he said earlier during an interview at his office in Calvary Chapel, where posters advertising Graham's revival meetings hang on the wall. ``I tend to be pretty cynical.' You won't catch him driving a car with a bumper sticker that says ''Honk if you love Jesus,'' reading the Left Behind novels or preaching about the end of days.

Tchividjian makes fun of contemporary Christian music, slogans, books and T-shirts. He distances himself from conservative Christians who picket abortion clinics and rail against homosexuals. He apologizes for sounding ''overly religious'' at times and says he was reared to question God and his faith.

Wearing Their Beliefs on Their Chests – Christian merchandise sales soar

There was a time when such symbols were worn discreetly and were purchased mostly at gift shops or Bible stores. Now, emboldened perhaps by celebrities like Ashton Kutcher and Paris Hilton, who are photographed brandishing spiritual messages on shirts and caps, aspiring hipsters and fashion groupies as well as the devout are flaunting similar items, which are widely available at mass-market chains and online.

A casual survey of the Internet last week, including mainstream marketers like Amazon.com, turned up T-shirts, bowling bags, belt buckles and dog tags by the hundreds bearing messages like "Inspired by Christ," "Give All the Glory to God," "I {sheart} Hashem" (a Hebrew term for God), "Moses Is My Homeboy" and "Buddha Rocks."

Emergent churches attract worshippers with alternative religious experiences

In an era of suburban mega churches and declining mainstream churches, there are those who embrace the accouterments discarded by some Christians, especially candles, incense, Celtic crosses, labyrinths, elaborate Communion tables, prayer stations and the interplay of light and shadow. The folks who gather at the Hot Metal Bridge Faith Community's makeshift sanctuary at the Goodwill Industries Building on the South Side every Sunday embrace a ministry rooted in the wildness of a theatrical troupe intoxicated by the challenge of serving Jesus without embarrassing God. The Open Door provides a multi-sensory worship experience that embraces ancient practices, high technology, amplified music and a spirit of openness and hospitality. Though it would seem that the first goal of most congregations is owning their own building, Three Nails is content to be a movement of itinerant groups that meet in homes, coffee shops, bars and dilapidated churches on loan for a night.

Welcome to the stylistically varied world of the Emergent Church in Pittsburgh, a fellowship of believers whose Holy Saturday service cut across denominational lines. Pieces of Catholic, Anglican, Orthodox and even Jewish liturgies have been incorporated in all three worship services.

Making Men of Steel

Traditionally, the Superman stories have sidestepped religious questions.  The reasons aren’t hard to discern.  Fifty years ago comic books were generally considered juvenile fare.   Publishers were loath to allow the religious beliefs of young readers (or their parents) to be unsettled in any way.  Further, Superman was created at the height of the Modern era, when Science, not God, was still trumpeted as the answer to mankind’s problems.  Superman was a savior, but his powers were derived from science fictional Krypton, not a metaphysical God.  With the coming of post-modernity, however, and the exposure of science’s clay feet, publishers have allowed the spiritual to creep into the science-fictional.

As an example of this new openness, Jeph Loeb’s graphic novel, Superman For All Seasons (1999), came close to providing the Kents with a set of actual religious beliefs.  After a flood nearly wipes out Smallville, the family attends an outdoor candlelight service led by “Pastor Inquvist.”   Although the Christianity he presents is more symbolic than substantial, Loeb nonetheless finally answers the question I’ve asked since childhood: “Did Superman ever go to church?”

Christian rock bands try to tap into Creed's fan base and find success on mainstream radio

Critics and fans lamented and dissected the stealth spirituality of multiplatinum rock band Creed, but a new breed of aspiring stars apparently was taking notes. Creed is gone now, dissolved in a breakup that rock fans view with derision, relief or immense regret, but the group's imprint remains. Look no further than the uplifting messages behind the clanging chords of Switchfoot, Relient K and Further Seems Forever.

In Central Florida, the man behind Creed is ready to make Orlando into a new epicenter for the music that has outgrown the restrictive label "Christian rock." It's more mainstream now, says Jeff Hanson, the founder and president of Jeff Hanson Management & Promotions and a growing list of spin-offs that includes a new independent label, Silent Majority Recordings.

Clinton and Kerry co-sponsor religious freedom bill

A new bill co-sponsored by senators Hillary Clinton and John Kerry would seem, on the surface, the perfect chance to carry out the Democratic Party's fresh-minted strategy of getting religion. Supporters of the Workplace Religious Freedom Act say it would guarantee the right to religious expression on the job—whether that means a Sikh wearing a turban or an Orthodox Jew honoring the Sabbath. Its backers include a 40-strong coalition of leading clerics representing nearly every denomination—from Jewish to Catholic, Hindu, Muslim, and Seventh-Day Adventist.

Sounds straightforward, right?

The problem for Clinton and Kerry—two of the Democratic Party's biggest names and its most likely presidential candidates—is that a broad swath of their left-wing base thinks the bill is a backdoor means to curb individual rights, and has come out hard against it. Heavyweights like the American Civil Liberties Union, Planned Parenthood, and the Human Rights Campaign contend that, in practice, "workplace religious freedom" could allow a nurse to refuse to give the morning-after pill to a rape victim. Or it could allow a school counselor to proselytize on "sins of the homosexual lifestyle" to a gay teen.

The Biola Media Conference announces ‘The Deep End’

The Biola Media Conference celebrates 10 years of advancing the integration of faith and the arts with conferences that educate, inspire, and support people of faith involved or interested in media.

On April 23, 2005, come join in the opportunity to learn and interact with top industry pro's from Film, Radio, Journalism, PR, &  Worship as they share their wisdom gained from swimming in THE DEEP END.

THE DEEP END: Navigating the Open Waters of Hollywood

When our Media Conference began in 1995, Christians were hoping to get a foot in Hollywood’s door.  Faithful role models were limited both in number and in relative success.  Thank God for pioneers who paved the way for the myriad of inroads enjoyed by today’s faith-fueled storytellers.

Today, the unparalleled reception of Bruce Almighty, The Passion and Joan of Arcadia raises a completely different set of questions for the Christian community in Hollywood.  It is no longer a question of accessing power, but figuring out what to do with our growing opportunities.  What kind of stories do we want to tell?  How do we deal with money, power, success and failure?  What might become our new blind spots?

This new era presents new challenges.

For our 10th annual event, we want to move the conversation forward, to figure out how to swim in THE DEEP END.  We’ve left the shore, we’ve gotten wet, we’ve learned how to stay afloat.  Now, how do we navigate the high seas of Hollywood?

We've invited experts who have learned to swim with the sharks, who have discerned what it means to be to be shrewd, to be ambitious yet innocent - to work, serve and thrive in the open waters of Hollywood.

So grab your life jacket as we dive into THE DEEP END!

RECOMMENDED BOOKS:

The Wonder of His Love: A Journey Into the Heart of God by Nancy Stafford (Multnomah Books) ISBN: 1590523253

Imagine what life would be like if you began to grasp the depth of God’s passionate love for you. It would change you. It would calm your fears, transform how you see yourself, and ignite you with love for Him and others. In thirty-one stirring reflections, Nancy offers a fresh glimpse into the many facets of God’s love, then invites you to venture deeper into the mystery and majesty of His love, to embark on a never-ending journey into the heart of God. “I want you to know”, says Stafford, “that the God of the universe is wild about you, enthralled with you, completely consumed with love for you. So come...experience the wonder of His love.”

From Publishers Weekly:

"What difference would it make in your life if you spent the next month or so thinking about the love of God?" asks Stafford, host of a television beauty show and former star of such programs as "Matlock" and "St. Elsewhere." In 31 daily meditations, Stafford calls upon the beauty of nature as well as the sacrifice of Christ to persuade readers of God’s inexhaustible love for them. Drawing upon various writers, but especially Inklings such as C.S. Lewis, G.K. Chesterton and Charles Williams, Stafford makes her way through the glory and the transformative power of God’s love. Her writing style is dramatic and showy, yet conversational. Readers will appreciate her patient meditation on Christian freedom, and her perceptive understanding of the gap that exists between knowing one’s sins are forgiven and being able to feel forgiven.
